Rubber Ducky

We all remember the story of Rubber Duck. That warm yarn about a rebellious trucker who helped spurn a cultural movement in the USA. A song written by Carl Davis and performed by C.W. McCalls tops the pop charts at number one, today January 10th 1976. That song was .... you guessed it, Convoy.

The song seized on the growing interest in CB radios and "country" lifestyle that were becoming increasingly popular. Do you remember what your handle was? Yes young ones, before the I phone America occupied it's time using a CB radio to chat with each other, using such colorful names as, "Ace on the Base", "Back Alley Sally" and of course "BJ." America's interest was ripe for this type of song and their reaction to it was to propel it to number one. The song further pushed a cultural shift towards the life of a truck driver and their awesome hats and the use of CB's exploded. Bands like, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd saw their popularity climb during this part of the 70's, along with movies like Smokey and the Bandit, White Line Fever, The Great Smokey Road Block and the movie, Convoy, which was inspired by the song and starred Chris Christopherson. Paving the way for other songs like, The Devil Went Down to Georgia in 1979.

So go drag out your truck driving hat and CB and check out the video at the link below, let's go have a convoy.
