MLK Day
Martin Luther King once said, "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity." I think an important legacy of MLK along with many other great leaders is their willingness to push aside their own needs and concerns for the good of everyone in society.
I always viewed society with certain layers of people. Not in a bad way, but in terms of the types of people that are willing to go an extra mile for a cause or personal motivation. It's easy to say most of us wouldn't have done what MLK or perhaps someone like Ghandi or Mother Theresa accomplished. There seems to be a small percentage of individuals that push humanity on toward the better side of our human duality. For this, we owe MLK a huge thanks, for his personal sacrifice along with his dedication to a cause he and many others at the time felt was just and that today we take for granted and enjoy the day off.
I was also perplexed by why there are people in the world who view these types of people as a threat, enough of a threat to assassinate them. Think about it, it's never some total clown like Fred Phelps of West Baptistboro Church that gets shot down in cold blood, it's the Kennedy's, Kings and Lennons of the world.
So thank you Dr. for reminding us today that, "Human progress is neither automatic or inevitable...Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle, the tireless exertions passionate concerns of dedicated people."
